What a Beginner Beekeeping Kit Includes (and Doesn't)

One seller's kit contents next to what extension guides say a new beekeeper needs.

A starter kit saves you from matching parts one by one, but kits differ. Below is what one US seller, Blythewood Bee Company, lists in its beginner kits, next to what the extension guides say. It's a worked example of how to read a kit's contents, not a recommendation.

Seller's list from its product pages, checked Oct 26, 2026. Paint, tools for sampling mites and other items aren't in the list.
Part Listed in the seller's beginner kit What the extension guides say
Bottom board Screened bottom board, assembled. MSU: screened floors can be fitted with cardboard inserts used to sample and estimate varroa mite populations.
Brood box and frames Deep brood chamber with frames and plastic foundation, in 8-frame or 10-frame. MSU: choose 8-frame or 10-frame once. Frames are exchangeable between the sizes, but boxes, lids, inner covers and bottom boards aren't.
Honey box (super) One medium honey super with frames and foundation (a larger kit lists two supers and two brood boxes). MSU, for Mississippi, aims for two to three boxes before mid-July.
Covers Inner cover and telescoping outer cover. MAAREC lists inner and outer covers in a typical hive.
Feeder Wooden entrance feeder and a reversible entrance reducer. MSU says not to use entrance feeders. Ask how you'd feed syrup with this kit.
Smoker, hive tool, brush Small stainless-steel smoker with leather bellows, stainless hive tool, bee brush. MAAREC: a smoker and hive tool are essential; it prefers a smoker with a heat shield.
Protective gear Jacket with attached veil and goatskin gloves. MSU: veils that zip to a jacket or suit are the most protective. MAAREC: wear a veil at all times.
Queen excluder Only in the seller's largest kit. MAAREC lists it as optional equipment.
Hive stand Not listed. MAAREC calls a hive stand optional.
Bees Not included; the seller says the only thing you add is bees. MAAREC: order packages in January or February for April delivery. See the checklist.
Mite sampling or treatment Not listed in the contents. MSU calls varroa the biggest threat to your bees.

Questions to ask about any kit

  • 8-frame or 10-frame? The seller says 8-frame boxes are roughly 20% lighter than 10-frame boxes at the same height (that's the seller's figure). MSU says 8-frame is lighter too, and that you should commit to one size.
  • Is anything missing that you'll need? Compare the contents to the list above, and ask about feeding, mite sampling and extra boxes.
  • Does it come assembled? The seller says its kits ship assembled and ready to paint. It suggests any exterior latex paint (seller advice).
  • Do the parts match? MSU says to buy components that fit together, since makers' dimensions differ.
  • What are the local rules? See is beekeeping legal where I live? and sting allergy before you keep bees before you buy.
